about

The lyrics on the track 'Matrosen' (The Sailor) was written by the Danish poet Christian Winther (1796-1876), and is the first part of his poem of the same name. His poem 'Matrosen' is the best lyrical interpretation of the immense grief and anger that aroused in the Danish population at the loss of the fleet.

lyrics

Ved Toldboden steg en Matros i Land,
Hans Haar de vare saa hvide,
Han havde ei seet sit Fædreland
I mange Herrens Tide.

I Havets stærke Svaner?
Som smykkede her i Dammen Laae
Med Dannebrogs røde Faner?

Søger I end den gamle Færd
Paa fjerne, fjendtlige kyster?
Viser I Fjenden, hvor stolt i bær’
De egeplankede Bryster?

Nei! – I har glemt den gamle Sang,
De danske, jublende Toner,
Nu stemmer i op den Seiersklang,
Der tordner fra Brittens Kanoner
