Brief history:

Our EP "Paa Dækket Kalder De Døde" picks up where "Den Rædsomste Nat" left off story-wise, in the wake of the British theft of the Dano-Norwegian fleet in 1807, and covers the dire straits of Denmark-Norway and the naval combat of the "Gunboat war" between them and Britain.

As Denmark-Norway scrambled to find a solution to the lack of a navy and as large ships of line took time and timber to build (which the country increasingly lacked), the solution was to launch smaller "gunboats". These were large rowing boats, mostly driven by oars or a small sail, which was easier and faster to build, but poorly equipped with just a single or two cannons, and no protection against wind, weather or gunfire. The advantage was that they could maneuver more freely on a windless day than the larger ships-of-the-line, and a group of these gunboats could thus more easily surprise lone ships that ventured too close to the coast of Denmark. However, it was often an uneven battle and the Dano-Norwegian navy had few causes for celebration during this period. One of these successes was the capture of the Brig "HMS Tickler" on the 4th of June 1808, which is the inspiration for the song "Blodrøde Bølger"

Meanwhile, the last Dano-Norwegian ship of the line, "Prinds Christian Frederik", led by Admiral Jessen and Peter Willemoes (A naval hero of 1801), had escaped the naval theft by hiding the ship in Norwegian waters, and then formed the backbone of the now greatly reduced Dano-Norwegian fleet. The ship was sent on patrol in the Great Belt, but was spotted and intercepted by a British naval force off the Spit of Zealand in March 1808. After a heroic, but doomed, battle in which Willemoes and 68 sailors met their fate, the ship is set on fire, and thus Denmark-Norway was finally a country without a proper fleet. Several of the sailors were laid to rest at Odden Cemetery on the Spit itself, and the great poet Grundtvig wrote the poem "Komme Hid I Piger Smaa" for his friend Willemoes and a few lines for the fallen sailors. These same lines which is recited at the beginning of "Den Sidste Orlogsmand" was etched in stone upon their common grave. And while Denmark-Norway endured 6 more years of hunger, disease, grueling conflict and, ultimately, defeat and separation, this loss in many ways was the final nail in the Dano-Norwegian navy's coffin.

The cover artwork depicts this battle, painted by the danish naval painter H. P. C. Dahm (1787 - 1844) in 1808 with respect to local eyewitness accounts of the time.
